This is one of my favorite hymns. It goes waaay back to a tv show called Davey and Goliath. A version of this hymn was used for the theme song. It was many years later before I heard the words. To this day, I still enjoy watching Davey and Goliath. By today’s standards, this stop motion animation might seem “low budget” to some, but the stories are timeless and entertain as well as teach.
Martin Luther wrote this hymn around 1529. It is based on Psalm 49 and reflects Luther’s awareness of our struggle with Satan. For me, it’s a reminder of who I find my strength and refuge in. Throughout our Christian lives we fight a battle against an enemy that “seeks to work us woe”. We can all too easily fall to sin and temptation if we don’t find our strength and protection in our Lord and Savior. No matter what the difficulty, we can find refuge and peace in our God.
